A bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense was observed for the first time in Thau iagoon between November and December 1998. Maximum cell concentrations detected in shellfish farming areas (85 000 Cells/1) were high enough to make mussels and clams unsuitable for human consumption (max. 850 ug. STX eq.100 g'1) while toxic levels in oysters did not exceed, or even reach, the international public health threshold established for PSP toxins. This event, new to French Mediterranean waters, was investigated by both local and national veterinary services and by the Ifremer teams involved in the National Monitoring Network for Phytoplankton and Phycotoxines (Réphy). The chronological and operational description of the event was compared with data...

Nesting biology of Centris (Hemisiella) tarsata Smith (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Centridini) Zoologia
Aguiar,Cândida M. L.; Garófalo,Carlos A..
Nests of Centris tarsata Smith, 1874 were obtained from trap-nests in areas of dry semi-deciduous forest (Baixa Grande) and caatinga (Ipirá), in the State of Bahia. Nesting occurred in bamboo canes and in tubes of black cardboard with 5.8 cm (= small tube) and 10.5 cm (= large tube) in length and 0.6 and 0.8 cm in diameter, respectively. In both areas C. tarsata nested during the wet season producing four generations in Baixa Grande and three generations in Ipirá. The immatures of one generation underwent diapause at both sites. The bees constructed their nests with a mixture of sand and oil. In general, the cells were elongated and arranged in linear series with its opening pointing towards the nest entrance. Completed nests had two to three cells in...

The Spanish National Forest Inventory: history, development, challenges and perspectives PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Alberdi, Iciar; Cañellas, Isabel; Vallejo Bombín, Roberto.
It is important to have a statistically robust forest information data base which can be updated and can provide long-term information. National Forest Inventories (NFI) provide one of the best large-scale sources of information, and therefore are a cornerstone of forest policies. The scopes of NFIs, which are the primary source of data for national and large-area assessments, has been broadened to include new variables to meet increasing information requirements. This paper describes the history, methodology and guidance of Spanish NFI and international requirements. The current objectives are determined by analysing future perspectives and possible direction of future assessments. These objectives include harmonization of NFI, open data source and to...

Dynamics of an estuarine ecosystem - The Chesapeake Bay experience: Statistical approaches and water quality patterns ArchiMer
Alden, Rw.
A long-term water quality monitoring program has been established in the Virginian waters of the Chesapeake Bay. To date, over eight years of data have been analyzed to characterize spatio-temporal patterns and long-term trends in water quality. Complementary multivariate statistical procedures were employed to define spatial and seasonal patterns, while a series of non-parametric trend analyses were used for determining overall, site-specific, and season-specific long-term trends for water quality variables in the tributaries and mainstem of the Bay. Particular attention was focused on determining the effect of river flow on the trends, because flow rates in some of the tributaries have changed dramatically since the beginning of the monitoring program....

The Measurement, Monitoring and Evaluation Strategy AgEcon
Alford, Andrew R.; Clark, Richard A.; Griffith, Garry R..
A critical component of the Continuous Improvement and Innovation (CI&I) process described in Paper 4 above is Performance Assessment - analysing and interpreting the results achieved, and not achieved, in relation to the focus and target outcomes. This is made easier if specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are established during Action Design and monitored during Action Implementation. The target outcome for the Measurement, Monitoring and Evaluation (MME) Strategy is to design and implement effective and efficient MME mechanisms that will demonstrate improvements and innovations in individual beef businesses and supply chains and in the broader Australian beef industry.

The Reporting and Support Framework AgEcon
Alford, Andrew R.; Purcell, Dougal; Clark, Richard A.; Griffith, Garry R..
The Reporting and Support Framework is an integral component of the Measuring, Monitoring and Evaluation (MME) strategy. This framework is designed to capture changes in practices, processes and outcomes in the CI&I partnerships and in beef businesses, partnerships, value chains and the broader Australian beef industry so as to provide support within the CI&I partnerships and to meet project and CRC reporting requirements. Because of the multiple users of the information, and the multiple environments in which it is expected to be used, the BPP reporting and support framework has been a difficult framework to develop. There have been several versions that have been adapted and improved over time, but we hope that it is now sufficiently flexible to...

Monitoring of trace metal contamination in the Souss estuary (South Morocco) using the clams Cerastoderma edule and Scrobicularia plana ArchiMer
Anajjar, E; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Bergayou, H; Moukrim, A; Burgeot, Thierry; Cheggour, M.
Concentrations of seven metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, Zn, Hg) were monitored monthly during 2 years in two bivalves, Cerastoderma edule and Scrobicularia plana collected from the Souss estuary (South Morocco) before and after the commissioning of a sewage treatment plant in November 2002. According to trace metals, changes in concentrations were observed mainly in S. plana, characterised by a decrease of Cu, Hg and Pb when Cd was clearly increasing. Conversely, no clear changes were observed in C. edule during the same periods. This study suggests the use of S. plana in the monitoring of trace metal contamination of such coastal marine environments.

Estimation of alluvial recharge in the semiarid REA
Andrade,Tafnes S.; Montenegro,Suzana M. G. L.; Montenegro,Abelardo A. de A.; Rodrigues,Diogo F. B..
In areas where there is irrigated agriculture, the recuperation of water reserves in alluvial aquifers may occur preferentially due to precipitation. Recharging can be evaluated from variation information of water depth measured in piezometers or observation wells. Thus, the aim of this research is to study the recharge in the alluvial aquifer formed by the Mimoso temporary stream in the semiarid region of Pernambuco (PE), Brazil, using the method of the fluctuation of the water level. This system is typical on the Brazilian Northeast semiarid region, using groundwater for domestic supply and for irrigation on small scale agriculture. Monthly potentiometric levels and rainfall data were used. The selected period for the study, from January 2002 to October...

No more reason for ignoring gelatinous zooplankton in ecosystem assessment and marine management: Concrete cost-effective methodology during routine fishery trawl surveys ArchiMer
Aubert, A.; Antajan, Elvire; Lynam, C.; Pitois, S.; Pliru, A.; Vaz, Sandrine; Thibault, D..
Gelatinous zooplankton, including cnidarians, ctenophores, and tunicates (appendicularians, pyrosomes, salps and doliolids), are often overlooked by scientific studies, ecosystem assessments and at a management level. Despite the important economic consequences that they can have on human activities and on the marine foodweb, arguments often related to the costs of monitoring or their coordination, or simply negligence, have resulted in the absence of relevant monitoring programs. A cost-effective protocol has been applied on trawling from existing fishery surveys conducted by national laboratories in England and France. The testing phase has successfully demonstrated the adequacy of such a tool to sample macro- and mega-zooplankton gelatinous organisms in...
