A bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense was observed for the first time in Thau iagoon between November and December 1998. Maximum cell concentrations detected in shellfish farming areas (85 000 Cells/1) were high enough to make mussels and clams unsuitable for human consumption (max. 850 ug. STX eq.100 g'1) while toxic levels in oysters did not exceed, or even reach, the international public health threshold established for PSP toxins. This event, new to French Mediterranean waters, was investigated by both local and national veterinary services and by the Ifremer teams involved in the National Monitoring Network for Phytoplankton and Phycotoxines (Réphy). The chronological and operational description of the event was compared with data... |

A long-term water quality monitoring program has been established in the Virginian waters of the Chesapeake Bay. To date, over eight years of data have been analyzed to characterize spatio-temporal patterns and long-term trends in water quality. Complementary multivariate statistical procedures were employed to define spatial and seasonal patterns, while a series of non-parametric trend analyses were used for determining overall, site-specific, and season-specific long-term trends for water quality variables in the tributaries and mainstem of the Bay. Particular attention was focused on determining the effect of river flow on the trends, because flow rates in some of the tributaries have changed dramatically since the beginning of the monitoring program.... |

A critical component of the Continuous Improvement and Innovation (CI&I) process described in Paper 4 above is Performance Assessment - analysing and interpreting the results achieved, and not achieved, in relation to the focus and target outcomes. This is made easier if specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are established during Action Design and monitored during Action Implementation. The target outcome for the Measurement, Monitoring and Evaluation (MME) Strategy is to design and implement effective and efficient MME mechanisms that will demonstrate improvements and innovations in individual beef businesses and supply chains and in the broader Australian beef industry. |

The Reporting and Support Framework is an integral component of the Measuring, Monitoring and Evaluation (MME) strategy. This framework is designed to capture changes in practices, processes and outcomes in the CI&I partnerships and in beef businesses, partnerships, value chains and the broader Australian beef industry so as to provide support within the CI&I partnerships and to meet project and CRC reporting requirements. Because of the multiple users of the information, and the multiple environments in which it is expected to be used, the BPP reporting and support framework has been a difficult framework to develop. There have been several versions that have been adapted and improved over time, but we hope that it is now sufficiently flexible to... |

Concentrations of seven metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, Zn, Hg) were monitored monthly during 2 years in two bivalves, Cerastoderma edule and Scrobicularia plana collected from the Souss estuary (South Morocco) before and after the commissioning of a sewage treatment plant in November 2002. According to trace metals, changes in concentrations were observed mainly in S. plana, characterised by a decrease of Cu, Hg and Pb when Cd was clearly increasing. Conversely, no clear changes were observed in C. edule during the same periods. This study suggests the use of S. plana in the monitoring of trace metal contamination of such coastal marine environments. |

In areas where there is irrigated agriculture, the recuperation of water reserves in alluvial aquifers may occur preferentially due to precipitation. Recharging can be evaluated from variation information of water depth measured in piezometers or observation wells. Thus, the aim of this research is to study the recharge in the alluvial aquifer formed by the Mimoso temporary stream in the semiarid region of Pernambuco (PE), Brazil, using the method of the fluctuation of the water level. This system is typical on the Brazilian Northeast semiarid region, using groundwater for domestic supply and for irrigation on small scale agriculture. Monthly potentiometric levels and rainfall data were used. The selected period for the study, from January 2002 to October... |

Gelatinous zooplankton, including cnidarians, ctenophores, and tunicates (appendicularians, pyrosomes, salps and doliolids), are often overlooked by scientific studies, ecosystem assessments and at a management level. Despite the important economic consequences that they can have on human activities and on the marine foodweb, arguments often related to the costs of monitoring or their coordination, or simply negligence, have resulted in the absence of relevant monitoring programs. A cost-effective protocol has been applied on trawling from existing fishery surveys conducted by national laboratories in England and France. The testing phase has successfully demonstrated the adequacy of such a tool to sample macro- and mega-zooplankton gelatinous organisms in... |
